Rockabillys Offence Starts Hot En Route to Opening Day Victory
The Rockabillys opened the season with a demanding 9-4 victory over the Dubois County Bombers.
In a game that seemed as if it was decided in the first inning, the game was all but over when the Bombers realized who was managing the Rockabillys on Opening Day. Matty Holem, the first-year manager of the Jackson squad, has coached in many leagues across the nation, and after tonight's victory, he is now 13-1 in opening day matchups.
Coach Holem cannot take all the credit for the victory tonight, however, as the bats were as hot as the West Tennessee sun. Hayden Mosley led the way, driving in 3 of the Rockabillys 9 runs while going 3/4. "I was trusting my hands," Mosley said. There is also more at stake for Mosley this season as he is looking for his four-year home this fall. There were many other offensive standouts, including Ayden Makarus, who went 2-4 with a 2 RBI triple in the first inning.
The Rockabillys ran into some nail-biting pitching situations that they ended up on the winning end, with both exceptional zone placement and web gems that helped save runs from crossing home plate. "It was a really good sign," Holem said, "To be able to dig out of holes shows a lot about character." The Bombers ended the game with the same hit count as the Rockabillys, but the exceptional pitching from Onorato and Hachem kept the Rockabillys ahead in the game.
The four pitchers for the Rockabillys combined for 12 strikeouts while combining for 10 hits and four earned runs. Onorato ends up with the win after coming into the game in the fourth while only allowing 1 run to cross during his time on the rubber.
The Rockabillys will continue their 6-game homestand today (May 27) at 7 pm. They will take on the Dubois County Bombers for the final time this season. The Rockabillys are celebrating Church Family Night, so come on out and cheer on the undefeated Jackson Rockabillys!
